Shoe Care for GORE-TEX® FOOTWEAR
Whether leather, synthetic or a combination of materials the outer layerof our shoes is exposed to heavy wear and tear. It is not only exposed tothe outside environmental conditions, but also each step taken puts stresson the upper material. To maintain the suppleness and elasticity of the uppers, and preserve the polished appearance, all shoes should be treated with the proper careproducts from time to time.
But pay attetion: all shoe care products are not the same. By applying an inappropriate care products, the pores of the upper material could become blocked which could impair the essential function of the GORE-TEX® membrane with regards to perceived climate comfort.
Leather, for example, when not treated, will become dry and brittle, is likely to shrink in areas where the leather bends during wear,and will eventually crack.GORE tests all upper material components used in GORE-TEX® footwear for breathability, among other things. Care products are also tested to ensure that when used, the upper materials` properties are not altered. The care products are appropriate only when proven not to effect the breathability of the uppers.
These methods guarantees the upper material over time maintains its properties and therefore the high quality standards of GORE-TEX® footwear.
Suede
Clean excess dirt from the upper material. Heavily soiled shoes can be cleaned best with a damp cloth or a brush. Leave the shoes to dry overnight, but avoid placing the shoes in direct sunlight or near any heat source. Treat the shoes with a water repellent using an aerosol or pump spray, ashoe care water repellent combination, or a liquid cream. Allow to dry. After each treatment, lightly brush to renew the textured appearance.
Smooth Grain Leather (Nubuck)
Clean excess dirt from the upper material. Heavily soiled shoes can be cleaned best with a cloth or a brush. Leave the shoes to dry overnight, but avoid placing the shoes in directsunlight or near any heat source.Treat the shoes using an aerosol or pump spray water repellent, andfollow by applying a shoe cream (best is a non oil-based emulsion cream). Apply the cream regularly in thin layers, as this is more effective than inthick layers all at once.Allow to dry at least 10 minutes.Follow by polishing with a soft cloth.
Textile
Clean excess dirt from the upper material.Heavily soiled shoes are best cleaned with a brush or a sponge and lukewarm water.Allow the shoes to dry overnight, but avoid placing the shoes in direct sunlight or near any heat source. Treat for water repellency using an aerosol or pump spray.Allow to dry. Application: It is best to first clean heavily soiled shoes with a brush andlukewarm water. Do not leave wet shoes to dry near any heat source orin direct sunlight. The shape of the shoe can be maintained by inserting newspaper or shoe trees, and drying the shoes at room temperature. After cleaning, the shoe care products and water repellent ( = GORErecommended products for GORE-TEX® XCR Footwear ) should becarefully applied following the manufacturer's instructions. Remember to apply in thin layers as it is always better to apply a little more oftenthan a lot at once.
Note:
The GORE-TEX® membrane is and will always remain waterproofand breathable. Care products and water repellents are not necessary for the membrane, but for the protection and care of the upper material of the shoe. The membrane and the uppers function together in accordance with these properties:
Durably waterproof upper materials cannot be saturated when wet, the therefore the shoes won't become heavy or soggy.
Upper materials treated with water repellents have a better resistanceto dirt
Well-treated shoes and shoelaces prohibit water from being absorbedup to the upper edge of the shoe on the outside and then penetratinginside the shoe
The quality of the shoe can only be preserved through regular and proper care and using water repellents and other care products testedand recommended by GORE. The upper material will remain supple,and the pores will not close. At the same time, the leather will notbecome rough or crack.
The Gore Quality Seal clearly identifies at a glance those licensed productswhich have been tested and approved in the Gore labs. This seal may beplaced only on those products by licensed partners and only for tested andapproved products. This seal clearly separates recommended productsfrom other products.
When the consumer purchases socks and shoe careproducts carrying the seal, he can be certain that with the properapplication, he'll benefit from and enjoy the maximum comfort.
