Indian Muntjac
(Muntiacus muntjak vaginalis)
Throughout regions of India, Nepal, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, Taiwan, and Southern China live the most primitive member of the deer family, the Indian Muntjac. This nocturnal animal can be found in the hilly areas of the countryside among the outgrowths of dense vegetation. These areas of vegetation contain all of the plants, leaves, shoots, roots, bark, and fungi that make up the their diet. The muntjac's long tongue allows them to strip the leaves and twigs off of bushes, and it is so long they use it to clean their face. Scent glands located below their eyes and on a "V" shape on their forehead are rubbed on grass and twigs, helping the muntjac to mark their territory. They also have a loud warning call that sounds similar to a barking dog. Only the male muntjac have antlers, although, in aggressive situations they tend to use their tusk-like upper canine teeth.
